Outstanding Financial Success 

  • Remarkable financial position - reduced the projected deficit by 80% for the first full financial year. 
  • Limited rate increases, despite the dire prediction that our rates would rise by 28.45% in the first year alone.
  • Commended by the Queensland Audit office (QAO).

Grant Funding success

  • Over $30 million obtained in external grants for major infrastructure projects, including Port Douglas Water Reservoir, Daintree Gateway, Flood Resilience projects, Disaster Recovery Works and the Mossman Aged care Facility.

Infrastructure Development

  • Biggest capital works program in the history of the Douglas Shire.
  • Vital long overdue capital works – largest ever in the history of the Douglas Shire. By mid 2016, we will have completed over $48 million, including more than $23 million in Disaster Recovery Works (NDRRA) funded capital works.

Economic Development Initiatives

  • Inaugural Douglas Business Forum – great success
  • Support for tourism, agriculture, economic diversity

  • Work & Invest in Paradise initiative:  lifestyle & location, business growth: tourism, agriculture, sugar cane, aquaculture, cocoa, diversification
  • Business Assistance:  SpacePort, free access to up to date regional economic profile data online, promotion and supporting local and regional business develop workshops and forums, supporting small business with access to web based links, tools and grant information to assist businesses to grow and prosper

Leadership in Tourism and Events

  • Support for tourism and events
  • Increased funding for TPDD and certainty with a 3 year agreement
  • Increased funding for Tourism, Port Douglas Daintree (TPDD), provided certainty with a 3 year agreement. Douglas Shire Council contributes more to tourism per capita than any other Local Government Area in Queensland, reflecting the importance of tourism to our local economy. 

Sustainable Development 

  • Dozens of planning approvals, throughout the entire Shire, including the Sheraton Mirage re-development, Mossman Aged Care Facility, Reef Marina 37 berth increase, Daintree Horizons, Shepherd Valley, Wonga Beach and many more….

Community Development 

  • Introduced New Community, Events, Business, Arts Grants Programs
  • New funding programs:  events, business development, community, arts, sporting and cultural opportunities.
  • Adopted an event strategy in May 2014
  • Exciting and growing events calendar with council sponsoring a number of new events, as well as long time favourites.

Environmental Initiatives

  • Investing more than $5 million in cleaner, greener water infrastructure and technologies.
  • Green Building Program – reducing energy consumption in Council facilities

Consultation and Communication

  • As Mayor, I initiated the inaugural Douglas Business Forum, the Daintree Forums and the Daintree Joint Management Group. There has never been a council in the history of Douglas that has consulted, communicated and connected with residents and ratepayers to the extent we have.
  • Consultation -  more than 22 specific projects, including the Corporate Plan, Daintree Forums, Daintree Joint Management Group, inaugural Douglas Business Forum, Flagstaff Hill walking trail, Hot food at the markets, Coconut Management plan, Croc Management

Professional Advocacy 

  • I have advocated to all levels of Government and Industry on a number of issues of importance, including Port Douglas Water Reservoir, Rocky Point Boat Ramp, Port Douglas School Crossing, Dixies Shed, upgrade of Diwan Health Centre, Centre Cow Bay Toilets, Dubuji Boardwalk

I believe we have every reason to be optimistic and confident about the Douglas region.
